What is Counseling and therapy?
Individual therapy is practiced using a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Adlerian Therapy Approach. Therapy is not just about talking and listening, but also includes components to assist clients from being stuck in their own way of thinking and processing. It is the stuck place that often brings people to feelings of helplessness, depression, anxiety and not perceiving issues with hope and options for change. These types of perceptions are often developed outside of ones ability to notice how and what they are. Therapy can help to identify rules and thoughts that an individual develops and follow as their own individual laws of operating with themselves and others.
Trauma and stress are also reasons people seek therapy. Individual therapy can be helpful with use of Cognitive processing, guided imagery, and systematic desensitization techniques.
Family therapy is practiced using a systemic approach looking at family rules that operate within the family and often keep it stuck in transactional patterns that were often learned in ones family of origin and function as a way of operating in their own family. Some family rules and roles work well within one family system, but not so well in another. Therapy will focus on identifying these, breaking down patterns that do not function well for the family, establishing hierarchical structure, establishing boundaries between family members, and working together as a parental subsystem and family to establish new rules within the family when necessary.
Premarital and marital therapy is practiced in much the same way as family therapy from a systemic perspective. The couple as a system in therapy will learn about their beliefs and ways of acting and reacting within a romantic relationship. This is often developed in ones family of origin either as a repeat behavior (positive or negative) or as a defense mechanism to prevent a repeat behavior one saw in their family of origin. For example, a person can be rigid, closed off, and not vulnerable to another partner when they have fears of abandonment or have dealt with traumatic experiences as a child, so as a protective mechanism they stay withdrawn in a romantic relationship, which can often look like they just do not care to another partner. These types of defense mechanisms can tear a couple apart with assumptions and lack of intimate connection within a safe environment. Couples therapy will help the couple to identify their own mechanisms that create the chaos withing the couple system so they can begin to rebuild a connection within a safe environment.
Therapy is an active process that at times may include homework, practicing techniques learned in session, or challenging current beliefs and behaviors. As an individual, couple or part of a family in therapy it is necessary to take part in your own growth and identify your own desires for change and practice enacting those, whether it is through your thought process or behaviors.
